Jesse Morgan's Tolman Jumbo build
Well, It has been awhile since I have had time to post. Did not get much done in June and July due to work, son getting deployed and supervising crew on new roof for the house, putting up a carport to supplant the "costco special" for the rest of the build.
August...got alot accomplished this month. Finished enclosing the carport for the winter, so I can keep on working in the bad weather. Made some cross supports to hold block and tackles to hoist the bottom. Made the transom, stringers, and bowstem. The transom was pretty straight forward. Making the cut on the stringers I think I must have triple checked myself before I made the cut. Two hundred bucks on the line if you screw it up, but it went great once I commited to it. I was disapointed in the quality of the versalam. I had to fill a number of missing knot holes in the outside plys, and voids in the edges.
Sept...cut the side panels, and just finishing up glassing the inside of the last panel tomorrow. I am using 12mm Aquatek for the sides instead of 3/8" marine ply. It is much less expensive than the 3/8", and looks a hell of alot better also. I have been told it should not be to hard to make the bend at the bow. One guy in AK used 1/2", so I should be good to go.
I got a screamin deal on some 15/16 exterior ply that had a bad gouge from a hyster on one edge. Bought 1/8" luan to laminate to the 15/16th" for the shelves. I layed out the shelves and cut the 1/8th ply (both sides at once;mirror image) and faired with my sander, so they are identical. I then laminated the 1/8th to the 15/16th. It was easy then to cut the 15/16th and fair to the 1/8th pattern. The 15/16th was excellent ply! Very very few voids, and I was able to get all the cuts without getting into the damaged ply.
I will be using the 12mm ply scraps for the shelve caps, so I don't think the 1/16th of an inch difference in the shelves will be a big deal.
Next step is to clean up the work area, then haul the bottom panel back under the carport (has been sitting in my front yard under a tarp for the last two months). Guy who owns the house next door has the house up for sale, so now he may finally be able to sell it ..;-)
Hoist the bottom panel up, and set up the jig for the framing. My goal is to have the hull flipped by the end of October.
