Tolman Skiff - Dodson Jumbo: 3/28 - 4/2 build

I am making progress. Since my last post I have fit the windshield panels in place. I needed to fit them so I could fit the upper panels in place. I needed the upper sides in place so I could fit the lower side in place. Once I got everything fitting like I liked it I started with the lower side and glued it up solid.

After both lower sides were epoxied in place I fit the upper sides in place and started working on the 2" shelves. I had several good ideas for doing this to "save" time and after wasting a day, I did it the way Renn recommended. (Note to self, don't try and out think Renn. He has been there and done that.) While fitting the lower sides I noticed that I had about a 3/8" curve in the upper edge. both ends were correct but it dropped about 3/8" about 18" from the front bulkhead and then started back up. I set my outside trim flush with both ends and used a straight edge so the trim was fair and straight. This gave me a flat edge to fasten the shelf to and no one will be the wiser, except those who read this. I'll post some photo's of the problem and fix. I also used 1/2" for the doubler and not 1/4". This gives extra strength and covers up all sins. I am very happy with the final product. The photo belows shows the inside of the trim piece and how far my side dropped. They light colored wood is the trim. Lucklily epoxy cures all.

I now have both sides epoxied with shelves. A little sanding on the inside and I am ready for tape. I put small fillets on the shelves and trim on the outside and they are ready for tape. After that the cuddy and sheer deck are ready for glass.

I love the extra wide sheer deck around the cabins. With over 8" of deck they will be a joy to walk on after the 3" I am used to.

I assume, judging by your first entry, that you live in Alaska. I was wondering what sort of windows you intend to use, whether you are purchasing 'premade' (with a frame already attached ready to bolt on) ones, or whether you are making them yourself, and where you are getting whatever you are using. Thanks-

Russell

I apologize but did not see this question earlier. I plan on using safety glass with a H channel for the windshield and go with Wynne windows for the longer side operaters. The smaller side and rear windows will probably be Lexan and H channel as well. The rear door will be roll up vinyl initially until I use it a while.
