Okoume or...?

2 hours 26 min ago

Am looking for plywood less than 4 mm. Apparently, Okoume has no rot
resistance so I'd like something else. However, I cannot even find
Okoume less than 5/32" thick.
Any ideas?

Glue thickness?

2 hours 26 min ago

I am building a new hatch lid from two 4mm ( ~1/6"") sheets of marine
ply. Reinformcement structures will follow. My question here is: How
much glue (epoxy resin plus cotton fibres as thickener) is the
optimum? My felt guess is 0.1 to 0.2 mm, i.e. ~1/240 to 1/120". Less
is hardly possible, more? The curvature is about 15 mm elevation in

Moving and mounting 7000# ballast

2 hours 26 min ago

In October I posted this:
I finally got around to updating my website with my adventure pouring
a 7000 lb. ballast keel. Things can, and DO, go wrong. If you're
interested in how I did it, and perhaps how I should have done it
differently, take a look at: [link]

My poor MiniCup sailboats

2 hours 26 min ago

After years of use, My Stevenson Project Minicup 12' sailboats may be
reaching old age. Number 1 (Tadpole) had severe rot last year even
though i had rebuilt her once. I had planned to rebuild her again and
had stripped her of all paint and even removed all the old non-
stainless screws in prep for glass and epoxying her but I simply do

Oar maintance

2 hours 26 min ago

I bought a pair of eight foot oars this summer and they proceeded to go to
hell finish-wise. I used the boat almost daily and did not feel that
protecting them from the weather would be so important. Now I am going to
sand them and give them a new finish. What sort of finish do they need and
why was this finish not applied at the factory?

Shower discharge thingammebob

2 hours 26 min ago

I am sussing out how to fit a shower in my Hunter Horizon 26 TK. I have
the system roughed out but am baulking at the waste disposal. The heads
compartment is a moulded part wall and floor section in plastic. I may
have to cut this to fit in a drain bund to the pump suction.
Anyone out there familiar with this sort of scope in this craft or a

What to build next

2 hours 26 min ago

Having built 2 MiniCup 12' sailboats (and rebuilt them)
Built a 9' nesting 2-Paw dinghy
Built a 20' Tolman
and owning a canoe, kayak, and sailboard and a 28' S2 sailboat, you
might think 8 boats is enough. Of course I also built a slide-in
truck camper this past year too.
So, what to build next? A bigger sailboat? I really like my 28' S2

Help with Std Horizon WS-1 Wind wiring

2 hours 26 min ago

I'm trying to resurrect an old WS-1 Standard Horiz wind instrument and need
info about wiring the masthead unit to the display. The wire colors on the
vane don't match with the color designations on the display terminals strip.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Winterizing & thermostat questions

Tue, 03/09/2010 - 10:05pm

I have a Mercruiser 140 hp straight 4 cylinder engine in a boat
which I want to keep in the lake and have available all year.
Usually it doesn't stay cold for long periods at a time here, but
this year it has been freezing or below for about a week or more.
I've kept the motor from freezing by using a handy little item

router bit question

Tue, 03/09/2010 - 6:05pm

Hello
looking to do a fancy edge on 1 inch pine from the box stores. This
wood is really 3/4 inch wide. The router bit catalogs all list 'height'
or "carbide height".
Does this include the roller on these bits? What sort of 'height' do I
want for 3/4 wide wood?

Term for the ornate stern of ships like HMS Victory

Sun, 03/07/2010 - 10:05am

My question might be too estoteric for this group, but thought I'd
give it a try anyway.
I am trying to think of the term used to describe the ornate sterns of
ships such as the HMS Victory, with the windows and the gold
scrollwork, etc. It's on the tip of my tongue - I used to know what it
was called - but it just won't come to me.

Replacing old alcohol stoves

Fri, 03/05/2010 - 7:05am

There are still many older boats with pressurized alcohol stoves.
These stoves are very dangerous in my opinion but replacing them with
the newer Origo type unpressurized ones is expensive and the Origo may
not fit the space of the old pressurized stove.
Years ago, I took the burners and rest of the fuel system out of my

Portlights from G10?

Tue, 03/02/2010 - 12:05pm

A previous thread mentioned Bronze portlights (absurdly heavy) and br also plastic ones (maybe not strong enough) but the glass/plastic br composite G10 is certainly strong enough. Might be interesting to try.
